Speedtouch 580 Wireless Setup

Overview

Once the SpeedTouch 580 has been powered up, a connection can be made to the router via an ETHERNET connection, USB connection, or WIRELESS connection.

In factory defaults there are no wireless security settings enabled on the ST580. It is possible to configure your router via the wireless connection be following these procedures.

Procedure

When you power on your ST580 a wireless signal will be detected by a wireless client on your PC or Laptop. To connect your PC or Laptop wireless client please follow instructions on Configuring your Wireless Client.

By default wireless security is not enabled on the ST580. Once your wireless client is configured you should be able to access the ST580 Web management pages via your browser. To access ST580 Web Management, please type 10.0.0.138 in the address bar of your browser.

Once you have accessed the web management page (10.0.0.138) and may need to setup the DSL (Jetstream connection). To set this up please follow the Online Installation Guide

Wireless Settings

1. Access the ST580 web management pages and select wireless from the Basic menu.

This will display the Wireless Configuration page as below.

2. Change Network SSID Name - OPTIONAL

The Network SSID is the router Service Set Identifier and is unique for each router. The default SSID is printed on the label on the bottom of your router and show in the SSID field.  The SSID network name can be changed to anything you would like to designate (between 8-32 characters)

To change the Network Name (SSID):

  • Enter a Network Name of your choice
  • Click Apply to immediately apply your changes.

NOTE: By default the SSID is broadcasted to any wireless client within wireless reach.

3. Change Interoperability mode - OPTIONAL

By default this is set for 802.11g & b. allowing both wireless clients to connect. This can be changed to allow only 802.11g (54 Mbps clients) or 802.11b (11 Mbps clients) to connect.

To change:

  • Select the desired option( 802.11g and b or 802.11g only)
  • Click Apply to immediately apply your changes.

The RATE displayed will change depending on the mode set.

Note: Wireless Connection Speed is proportional to distance and interface. Increasing the distance from ST580 or the number of obstacles in the path of the signal (walls, floors etc) the lower the connection speed.

4. Change Channel Selection - OPTIONAL

The default channel selection is AUTO. On power up the router will select the channel with the least interference. There are 13 possible channels, but it is recommended that channels 1, 6 or 11 be selected as first choice, as these channels allow maximum use of channel bandwidth. The router will try and select these automatically before selecting any other channel.

To update the channel:

  • Click update to let the SpeedTouch 580 re-evaluate the wireless conditions to base the new channel selection on. Your changes will immediately be applied. Note: Your PC should update automatically to the new channel, unless you changed your client to choose the channel manually.

5. Enable / Disable SSID  - OPTIONAL

By default the SSID is broadcast to all clients. Place a tick into the box “Only stations with the correct Network Name (SSID) can connect” to turn off broadcast. The SSID must now be manually entered into your computers wireless network settings to allow your client to access the wireless connection.

6. Enable / Disable Framebursting - OPTIONAL

Select Framebursting to enhance the performance of the wireless networks by improving the efficiency between your PC and the ST580 if your traffic is mainly downstream internet traffic.

7. Disable / Enable the wireless interface

To disable your wireless interface:

  • Unselect wireless interface enabled. All your wireless clients will be disconnected!
  • Click Apply to immediately apply your changes.

You can also disable your wireless interface by pressing the front panel button for 10 seconds. When the WLAN led is extinguished, the interface is disabled.

To enable your wireless interface:

  • Click Enable
  • Click Apply to immediately apply your changes.

You can also enable your wireless interface by pressing the front panel button for 10 seconds until the WLAN led starts flashing.

8. Checked Associated Stations

The number of wireless clients in range of the SpeedTouch 580 will be shown in this field. There may be stations in your associated stations list that should not be part of your network i.e. someone else connected to your SpeedTouch 580. To avoid this, it is recommended that a wireless security be enabled.

Note: Only active clients are associated. There may be inactive clients that may take advantage of your wireless network. This field should be checked regularly of unwonted clients or to avoid this issues engage wireless security.
